The Piccolomini Library was commissioned at the end of the 15th century by Cardinal Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius III, to commemorate the memory of his uncle Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who was elected Pope Pius II. The aim was to preserve and showcase the precious collection of manuscripts and codices that belonged to the humanist pontiff, although, over time, the library has become especially famous for its extraordinary cycle of paintings.

The true treasure of the Piccolomini Library are the frescoes created between 1503 and 1508 by Pinturicchio and his workshop. The walls depict, in ten richly decorated scenes, the most significant moments in the life of Pope Pius II: travels, diplomatic meetings, coronations, and historical events are narrated with great vivacity, brilliant colors, and meticulous attention to detail.
